Poem (Old School Days)

Some parts need to be Sinagporean's slang in order to get the reader's attention

The sky is vast and crystal blue,
The flags are raising, be silent!
The flags were like waves of the ocean,
Way above the dusty wooden cross,
Don't laugh, Don't whisper,
Pricipals give a speech, Don't fred,
People tap your back, don't even think about it!
Self-discipline is crucial, sigh...

keeping our shoes white, never mind!
Getting to our class, that's our goal,
Chit-Chat as we walked,
Thumping of footsteps as we followed,
Oh my! Oh my! Get into the class quickly!
The teacher is coming!
Behave yourselves, shhhhh!

Canteen is like a paradise,
It is a place for discussing answers, gossiping, joking, whatever you can think of!
What we think of it, you already know!
Food here is delicious,
It is cheap and worth it,
Special days, special food!

One time, one achievement,
Walking on stage full of pride,
What waits before me is a prize,
A prize that I will receive with honour,
Bow before the crowd,
Get of the stage which I will rarely get on.

After school, that's one thing,
Going home, that's another thing,
Seeing people vandalising railings, very common,
Seeing young ones waiting,
Tapping my feet as I wait,
The sun shone rentlessly on my back,
Here comes my ride,
Home Sweet Home!

There is another sky by Emily Dickinson

There is another sky,
Ever serene and fair,
And there is another sunshine,
Though it be darkness there;
Never mind faded forests, Austin,
Never mind silent fields -
Here is a little forest,
Whose leaf is ever green;
Here is a brighter garden,
Where not a frost has been;
In its unfading flowers
I hear the bright bee hum:
Prithee, my brother,
Into my garden come!

Q1.
How is figurative language used in the poem? Give the specific word(s), explain what type of figurative language it is and why the poet chose to use this figurative language.

-The words "come " and "my brother" are hyperbole(in other words exaggerating) figurative language. The phrase(s) " its unfading flowers" is a metaphor figurative language. The poet chose to use these languages as she wants to further describe the appearance of the forest and make as feel that we are in the poem.

The poem I have chosen describes the green forest. The choice of words a good, for example: unfading and serene. I like this poem as the words are not too bombastic but just right and able to understand it. The poem goes in a smooth manner like without stopping here and there. The part that I like is the part when she says "Into my garden come!", this makes my feel invited to enter and the word "come" is a hyperbole figurative language which means exaggerating. The part where she exaggerates more is the description of the forest, e.g. "where no frost has ever seen".

Urbanisation lesson

Urbanisation may seem amazing in its ways , but there is always a bad side of it.

Q1(Soil effects)

-Fertilisers left in the soil for a long time after use, will become toxic, killing plants being plant in it, therefore nothing can grow in it/ Infertile land

(Air effects)
-Air pollution due to deadly chemicals being pumped into the air/Can be harmful to humans/(If breathed in excessively)Can cause illnesses such as Asthma, lung cancer, suffocation, and apart from that low visibility.

(Water effects)
-Toxic waste is being discharged into the sea/Water pollution/Marine life will be killed, therefore causing the amount of food, in this case, fish, to decrease.

Q2,

Social effects on villagers
- Forced to quit their jobs/ Overcrowding/ Pollution harmful to health/ Will have to migrate to other places to find jobs

Social effects on Bombayites
-Bombay will be over-populated which will lead to overcrowding/ The number of poor citizens will increase/ There will be more less paid jobs because of over-population

Q3(light pollution)
-When more light is generated, the amount of electricity consumed will be greater, which will result in higher bills/payings for the citizens.

The village by the Sea (Reflection

In my opinion, Hari, the main character of the book, "Village by The Sea", is a very successful person. Overcoming obstacles, taking risks, goes on an adventure to work and at the same time support his family. Well, urbanisation is taking place and Hari needs to be independent and look for a job. I think it is a good think that Hari went to Bombay as it is beneficial for him. Being the only one in his family who is still able to work when his parents are down. Beneficial, in a way that he meeds to take up the responsiblility to live on his own, but with the help of other friends of course. Unlike students I see nowadays, Hari is much more responsible, independent that he took the risk to sneak into one of boats in order to travel to Bombay where he will seek his chance to find jobs. In return, money is earned to support the family.

From what I heard, the story "Village by The Sea" is actually a true story! It is just that the author changed the name of the characters. It is like WOW! a boy the age of us is able to go through all that, it is just an amazing feat to overcome. I am sure out there, somewhere, there is someone who is just like Hari.
