Favourite Chinese New Year Memory

My Favourite Chinese New Year memory was in 2009 when I celebrated Chinese New Year in two separate places. One in Singapore, and the other in Melaka. It was the most important year as well, as it was the year for Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). So, I need as much luck as I can get at this time of the year. What I was looking forward for 2009 CNY was not the red packets containing money we will be receiving but the family gathering that will be conducted. 2009 was the year of the zodiac Ox which will occur every 12 years. And every year, I would travel to Melaka to visit my relatives, we have family renunion dinner, catch up with old times and hear stories on what happens every year. The best part is when we play with fireworks, every year the blocks will compete with each other to have the longest show!

All Summer in a day (Online Lesson)

The people who were held responsible for Margot's bad treatment was her classmates, furthermore they treated her like a plush toy and even threw her in the closet. By right, the person who suggested to lock Margot up in the closet should hold the highest responsibility, but in all everyone is responsible for her treatment. In addition, I think what contributed to the class's way of treating her is the fact that she gets to go back to Earth.

If I were to be one of the classmates, I would help her. I would even tell them that all of us are different in many ways, even though you are from another planet, you should not treat each other badly. I will say that they should be ashamed of themselves, locking Margot up in the locker. I pity her as she has been waiting for many years to see the Sun. If I choose to start a mass fight, I obviously lose hands down, I would be outnumbered. In addition to all of this, I would advice Margot to be more opened as people will think. If you are anti-social and quiet most of the time, people may think that she is pathetic, most likely tease and bully her. Should she have any problems with her classmates, she will report to the teacher. Teachers are meant to help and handle situations like this, anyways they are trained for situations like this. I would try to have a nice chat with her to make her feel more calm and introduce the rest to her as well as introduce herself to the rest. This way we get to know each other better.

A situation where I collaborated with others intensely

During last year's projects day was the toughest group work in my secondary one course. My group mates and I were new to the component, therefore we did not expect to get high marks. We attended the Category 5, Creative Arts, which was quite amusing. I saw other groups with interesting proposals on what they are going to do, for example: Ice sculpture, Clay making, etc. What surprises me most is the group which presented with a song, no power point slides. I did not expect someone to sing for this category, I thought that it is only for arts and crafts. My group were doing on "Global Warming" which was the main topic nowadays. We were going to make a stop-motion film which will remind people that global warming is happening. We got through the preliminary rounds with ease but unfortunately failed the semi-finals. I reflected that my group partners did not have a fair-share of work and did not work hard enough. In the end, we learned our lesson to be prepared for any situation like this. I feel that I myself was quite greedy with the share of work, I am quite of a responsible person and tend to take on a great responsibility.

This is my short video we made over the June holidays. Hope you enjoy!

Reflection (Comic Strip)

This was my first time doing a comic strip on my computer other than doing on paper. In my opinion, I think that the best way to convey a message to others, is through sight. In many comic strips like the ones in Toondoon, helps to promote creative which I think lacks in many people. Cartoons are everyone's favorite. From the assignment of the creating comic strip, I have learned that comic strip is not just random stuff that people like to create, but a sign/message that needs to be brought out to others. In my previous post you see that there is a meaningful theme in the comic strip which is "There is No Shortcut to Success".

The Theme in Comics

The Camp

This is my Comic strip, I hope you like it! I drew this without props and images, just paint brushes and speech bubbles... I got the idea from a story told by my primary school Principal. The story was about people carrying heavy crosses on their backs and travelled to their destination which was far away like the Bridge in this story. However, one decided to cut of some wood of the cross so that it will be easier to carry. Unfortunately, they all came to a trench, they laid their cross on the gap and walked over. The guy who had cut his cross, ended up stuck on one side due to the fact that the cross is too short to be laid on the gap. Like the guy in my comic, he ended up drowning, I used this scene to get it into people's mind to tell them that "THERE IS NO SHORTCUT TO SUCCESS". Sorry if the comic is too tragic, it is for your own good.

Now here are the things that helped me in the comic
-I used paint brushes due to the fact that the website does not have what I want and to ensure the originality of my comic
- Have a comic book feature.

Last Year's Most Valuable Lesson

Before I get to my point, let me just justify that time passes very fast and waits for no one. Yesterday is history and tomorrow is the future, the important thing now is that you are prepared for the future... As for today, we call it a gift. So my point is that you must treasure every moment of your life before it is over, for you.... But today I will not go into life but lessons, so what was last year's most valuable lesson? Well, the lessons on Poems and The Village By The Sea are the most memorable lessons. Last year, we focused mainly on the book "The Village By The Sea", or the topic of the environment. The book was rather interesting and I was amazed by the story, with the fact that the pathagonist was at the highest level of independence. On the other hand, the lesson Poems was probably the most important lesson I have ever remembered. Poetic devices are required to help us in our literature tests. Poetic devices such as "Personification", "Assonance","Puns",etc. Therefore, I can conclude that these two lessons were the most valuable ones, not just because I cannot remember much, but because I thought of it everday...

Robinson Crusoe (Click here)

My favourite book is Robinson Crusoe ...

Since young, I love to read non-friction or better known as fact books. I fancy machines, especially trains. I studied them, read book about them, even had miniature trains. One show I used to watch everyday was "Thomas the Tank Engine". Faces on their boiler tanks and the fact that they TALK! I even thought one day I might become a train engineer. However, now that I am older, my mother says I read to much fact books and too little proper story books. Well, Robinson Crusoe was one of the very first "books" that I have ever read. What fascinates me, is the fact that Robinson himself, lived on a remote island all by himself! For 24yrs! He was even "attached" to the island which he had called it home for many years. Anyway, I think there is less than 5 people in the world who can conquer this feat.

Songs of Motivation (Online Lessons)

I song I had chosen is You raise me up by Goerge Groban...

And here are the lyrics...

You Raise Me Up

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up: To more than I can be.
__________________________________________________________________
Some of you may wonder why I chose this song. Maybe some of you may think like this. Example:"Hey come on! It is the new school! Why choose this kind of song? So boring!" Okay, well, I chose this song to remind you who brought you up/raise you up. It is of course your parents, right? Of course! Now let me say that I myself am a catholic, so let me share my thoughts religiously. God is the Lord who raise you up, so I can say that our parents are Gods, who helped us through tough times "walk on stormy seas". As being "God's" "desciples", we followed and listened to him which help us grow "stronger". This song also reminds us that we should thank our "raisers" for being there for us when we needed them. Well, so this is the same as thanking the Lord, Jesus Christ, for sacrificing himself because he loved us. All the times we have been through, Kingdegarten, Primary school, Pain, Exams, our parents were always there for us. Now that we are independent, who are we going to repay our parents.

Bless,
Ryan Lau

Questions (Online Lessons)

Have you ever been part of a group of people who were unkind to one or some individuals? What was the circumstance?
-Yes I had been in a group with people who are unkind to others.
And this what happened- It was back in primary school when this happened, it was quite long ago so I might not remember clearly. In my school, we are split up into 6 groups with about 5 to 6 students in each group. We would sometimes name our group. Points will be collected for every question answered. The winner after each major exam will get the prize.
How did you act?
-I would sometimes remind my remaining mates that we are in this together, no one is perfect, and different people have different characteristics. Furthermore, we got an adult/teacher to help out solve the matter.

What did you feel?
-I felt embarrassed and dissapointed as the motto at my school was "Man Of Integrity Man For Others"

Sincere,
Ryan Lau

Back again!

It is back to the blogging again...

Why, it is not so bad, anyways it is fun! So how was the first days of school in this year of 2011?
Well I think it is great, new teachers, new classroom, new curriculum, but same classmates. My first day of school was rather quite surprising, having my former secondary 1 form teacher as my secondary 2 form teacher, and I thought, here we go again. So I will make the best out of this year, learning from mistakes of the past and gaining new knowledge. Well so it is back to school, some of us may wonder how to react, whether to be sad or happy. We should all be happy by the way, who wants to stay at home and "die" of boredom, futhermore we can meet our friends!
So my expectations for this year is that I will excel in both sports and acadamics, as well as doing well in projects plus oral communication.

Yah so...
Here's my message to you all!

WELCOME BACK!

Cheers,
Ryan Lau
